Math courses offered in the Curriculum Guide

The objective at Hannibal is to have students take as much math as they can handle. In mathematics, as in other fields, students progress at different rates and levels of comprehension. Each student is expected to take math for all four years. In this way all students will exceed the New York State mandates. When the choice of courses is not obvious, students will be encouraged to try a harder course for at least two weeks. At the end of this period, there may be some changes in your program if the placement is not appropriate.

Course Descriptions

Algebra (1 credit)

A concentration of study is on Algebraic skills, solving equations, problem solving and graphing. Probability and statistics are also studied. This is the first course in preparation for the Math A Exam. (Algebra 2 and Geometry will complete this 3 year sequence.)

Geometry (1 credit)

This is the third and final course in the preparation for the Math A exam. Some of the topics studied include locus, circles, constructions, systems of equations and inequalities and trig applications. This course will use the graphing calculator as a tool for reviewing previously studied topics and as a technique for improving results on the Math A exam. The state exam will be given at the completion of this course. This exam must be passed as it is a graduation requirement.

Math 3 (1 credit)

This course will follow Geometry. The course involves such topics as trigonometry, geometry in the workplace, computers as problem solvers, quality assurance and process, logic, spatial visualization and transformations. Labs will be used to reinforce these concepts.

Math A/B (1 credit)

This course will emphasize Geometry and other topics needed to complete Math A exam. It will also begin the study of topics required in Math B. At the end of Math A/B students will take the State Math A Exam. This exam must be passed as it is a graduation requirement.

Math B (1 credit)

This state developed curriculum continues the topics introduced in the Math A and Math A/B courses. Units on Complex numbers, Relations and Functions, Conic Sections, Probability, Statistics, and Logarithms are studied. Trigonometry and applications are also covered in this course. Students who successfully complete this course and pass the Regents Exam will be eligible to take Precalculus.

Math 4 (1 credit)

This course will include a study of statistics, trigonometry, advanced algebra, conics and graphing of polynomial functions. The emphasis will be on application. The computer and the graphing calculator will be utilized.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Math B or Math 3

Precalculus with Trigonometry [MAT 143] (1 credit)

This is a college level course that completes the study of algebraic and trigonometric skills necessary for the successful study of calculus. Axioms of an ordered field, methods of proof, absolute value and quadratic inequalities, functions and their inverses, graphing functions, systems of equations, algebra of matrices, exponential and logarithmic functions and applications, circular functions and their inverses, trigonometric identities and equations, addition and multiple angle formulas, complex numbers, elementary theory of equations, binomial theorem and related topics. {college credit requires the payment of tuition}

Prerequisite: Pass Course III Regents class and Exam.

Calculus I [MAT 161] (1 credit)

This is a college level course that is the first course in standard calculus sequence, for students in mathematics, science and engineering. Algebraic functions, basic analytic geometry, limits and continuity, derivatives, including chain rule and implicit differentiation, differentials, Mean Value Theorem, indefinite and definite integrals, Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, applications including curve sketching, related rates, maximum-minimum, approximations, area, volume, arc length, surface area. {college credit requires payment of tuition}

Prerequisite: Pass Precalculus with Trig [Mat 143]
