Courses offered in the
Curriculum Guide
Physical Education (1/2
credit per year)
The High School Physical
Education Program offers students a wide variety of activities ranging
from competitive team games such as soccer to individual activities such
as tennis or weight training. In addition, adventure based activities
designed to build problem-solving skills and cooperation will be
introduced. Some activities will be held in a coeducational setting.
Physical Education classes
will be assigned to each student for the entire school year. Classes will
be 80 minutes long and meet every four days. The assignment will be
divided into a fall semester and a spring semester and will be considered
separately for grading and credit purposes. Each semester will be worth
1/4 credit. Students need a total of two credits to graduate.
Adaptive Programs (1/2
credit per year)
Those students who have
some type of medical disability, either short or long term, must still
complete their Physical Education requirement. An alternative program can
be designed to accommodate that student's abilities and may range from
written work to more moderate physical activity.
ELECTIVES
Sports in America (1 Credit)
This is a one credit elective
offered in the spring semester. Topics include sports issues and history
that reflect the values and ethics of 20th century America. Students must
complete two position papers, a biography project, a book report, and
contribute to the newspaper published by the class for the student body
and staff. The newspaper centers on high school sports but includes
articles about professional, college and local sports news as well.
Students also create a sports news program that is videotaped, watch
sports videos, discuss modern day sports issues and take a field trip. If
you have any other questions about the course please see Mr. Sturges.
